Lecture/Corfu’s Strategic Importance for Napoleonic France | 11/3 Solomos Museum 8:00pm

March 11 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

The Corfu Society of Studies – Solomos Museum hosts a lecture on Wednesday 11 March 2026 at 20:00, in Corfu.

Speaker: Michalis Politis, Emeritus Professor of the Ionian University.

In his talk, the speaker will attempt to answer a key historical question: why did Napoleon Bonaparte — victorious over the Austrians during the Italian Campaign — choose, during the negotiations at Campo Formio (1797), to grant Austria Venice (which he had occupied shortly before), while placing Corfu and the rest of the Ionian Islands under French control?

Through this lens, the lecture highlights Corfu’s strategic role within the geopolitical balance of the Napoleonic era and the broader Mediterranean theatre.

Time: 8:00pm

Date: 11/3

Place:Solomos Museum
